Bio of Prof Akpan Hogan Ekpo
Prof. Akpan Hogan Ekpo graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Economics from Howard University, Washington, DC. He earned an MA and PhD in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh. His research interests include Economic Theory (Microeconomics and Macroeconomics), Public Sector Economics, and Quantitative Methods. He has participated in continuing education programs at the World Bank Institute, Harvard University, and Oxford University.
Prof. Akpan Hogan Ekpo has lectured at universities in the USA, Africa, and Nigeria. He has held various government advisory roles and board positions in Nigeria, including adviser to the Calabar Municipal Government and Chairman of its Investment Council. He was also Chairman of the Ministerial Advisory Committee at the Federal Ministry of Finance, a board member of the Utilities Charges Commission, Non-Executive Director of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and a member of key committees such as the CBN’s Monetary Policy Committee and the National Economic Management Team, as well as the Steering Committee for Vision 2010 and 2020.
Professor Ekpo has had a distinguished academic career, holding roles such as department head, Dean, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. He was a Visiting Scholar at the World Bank and IMF. In 2000, he became Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Uyo and later the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University. He also served as the Director General and Chief Executive of the West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM), an institution owned by the Central Banks of Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
In 2001, Professor Ekpo received the National Productivity Merit Award from the President of Nigeria, and in 2003, he was honored with the Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Africa Leadership Award in Accra, Ghana. He is currently a board member of the New Nigeria Foundation, an NGO established in 2000 to promote sustainable community development through public-private partnerships.
