New Nigeria Foundation (NNF) places a high priority on the health and well-being of its employees, believing that health is wealth. To promote a health-conscious workplace, the Foundation’s Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) Committee organised two important health talks on Diabetes and Cholera during the first and second quarters of the year. These sessions were facilitated by two members of the Committee, Patience Ogwara and Amos Okoro.

Recognizing the importance of diabetes awareness, the HSSE Committee organized a session to educate staff about this widespread disease.

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), approximately 5.8% of adults aged 20-79 years in Nigeria have diabetes, translating to about 5.2 million people as of 2021. The lifestyle of many 9-to-5ers involves prolonged periods of sitting, contributing to physical inactivity, a known risk factor for Type 2 diabetes.

During the session, members of staff were informed on the types and symptoms of diabetes, how to interpret blood glucose readings, nutrition, and prevention strategies for Type 2 diabetes.

The session on Cholera was held due to the sporadic cholera outbreak in Lagos and other states in Nigeria. Information shared during the session covered the causes and symptoms of cholera and prevention tips. As a reminder from the session and to serve as a preventive measure, flyers that contain cholera preventive measures were posted in strategic areas of the office.

At New Nigeria Foundation, ensuring employees are aware of health risks and safety protocols is key. The Foundation will continue to organise health talks as part of regulatory compliance and workplace safety requirements.
