Ford Foundation Sponsors NNF’s Stakeholders Consultative Meeting on Safe and Responsible Mining in Osun State

New Nigeria Foundation (NNF), with support from Ford Foundation, West Africa Office, organized a stakeholders’ consultative meeting on safe and responsible gold mining in Osun State on Tuesday, 17th April 2018. The objectives of the meeting which held at Leisure Spring Hotel, Oshogbo, Osun State were to assess the feasibility of establishing a multi-stakeholder platform in Osun state to promote clean and sustainable mining, transparency and accountability in the use of revenue from mining activities an d development of gold mining communities. Thirty stakeholders comprising government (civil service, regulatory agencies, security agencies, local government, etc.), miners, civil society, communities, media, etc. attended the consultative meeting.

Two presentations were made on the National Gold Purchase Scheme by the Chief of Staff to the Honourable Minister for Mines and Steel Development, Mr. O’Seun Odewale; and the other presentation on the proposed multi-stakeholder initiative for promoting safe and responsible gold mining in Osun State was made by the Deputy Director of Programmes, New Nigeria Foundation, Mrs. Layide Adesanya. The meeting deliberated on the Gold Purchase Scheme being proposed by the Federal government and expressed their views on the effects of illegal mining on the gold-producing communities. NNF was able to identify and secure the buy-in of potential partners on the proposed multi-stakeholders’ initiative.
